Greetings from J-List September 29, 1998

Well, it's calendar season again, and that means a great chance to get some unique Christmas gifts for someone you care about (maybe even yourself). This year's Japanese calendars are excellent, with a lot of really nice choices, be they beautiful Japanese women, great anime calendars, Japanese musicians and "talents, rare looks at Japanese culture, and more. Part of the fun in entering the calendars into the computer is seeing who's slipped from No. 1 down the list (or off it completely) -- it's an interesting mirror into current Japanese pop culture. I'll be getting five or six of them myself, for my own collection. Please take a moment to scroll through the calendars and see if any of the excellent large-size calendars appeal to you. (In addition to the Calendars page link on the J-List main pages, you can find anime calendars on the anime page, JPOP calendars on the JPOP page, and adult calendars on page 3 of the magazines pages.)

For the benefit of anyone who wasn't here last year, Japanese calendars are very unique and special. They are very large, generally, being more like posters than normal calendars that are available in the US. The sizes are either A2 or B2, unless noted in the descriptions -- this is about 2 feet by 3 feet, shipped rolled. Unless noted, there are 7 sheets to each calendar (the cover, plus six calendar pages, two months to a page). The paper is very nice, with a very glossy finish, and bound with a metal rib (not the spirally thingies) that lets you easily fasten it to the wall with a pushpin without putting a hold in your calendar.

Prices for the calendars are as marked. Shipping will be $5 for SAL shipping, plus $3 for a handmade cardboard tube (there being no way to get real mailing tubes in Japan, we have to make our own). We experimented with mailing boxes last year, but enough of the boxes got crushed that we decided to not bother this time. If you order three or more calendars, the tubes will be free.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that the window for ordering these calendars is quite small. We'll start accepting orders immediately, and we expect the first calendars to show up from the distributor around mid-October. We'll have to stop taking orders around the first week of November, though -- any taken after that will be hard for our distributor to fill. As always, when ordering just in time" items like this, it's best if you can use a credit card, so that we can hold the order until the item comes in. For some calendars that are very popular

Just a quick update today. It was drizzling all day yesterday, so I did what everyone should do on such days -- sit around and play Civilization II on my Powerbook. What a way to kill a rainy day. As a result I have a big pile of email to go through on this lovely (but still drizzling) Sunday in Japan.

Today's update is a nice little one one. We have several new Race Queen-oriented items for fans of that worthy genre, new copies of the popular Memories and Karin photobooks, as well as more of the popular Nippon Mini-Skirt and Panst Dream items. Also, it's Dojinshi time again -- we finally got the last batch scanned and entered into the database. There are about 30 new items on the dojinshi page now, so please check them out.

Remember that J-List has a bunch of stuff at closeout prices. For example, we still have several different issues of the excellent CD ROM Choice, Windows 100%, the MPEG Soft Catalog, and more, all at great prices.

Hello from Japan. It's 1:30 Saturday morning as I write these words -- I had to leave work early to assist with a project my wife had started, the assembling of some very difficult bunk beds for the kids. I've finally got the update ready to go out now, though...

I took another trip to Tokyo today, my second in three days -- whew! It was hot, but the chance to hit Starbucks was worth it. In addition to running around the city looking for great stuff for J-List, I managed to almost complete my Star Wars figure collection (still need to find some Ewok figures though). I have a bookcase with three shelves, so I'm displaying the best of my figures inside. Does anyone know a good way to keep Star Wars figures fastened to a flat surface so that they don't fall down?

We have a fistfull of new items for you today. First, weve finally gotten a bunch of new "available by order" videos from our distributor, with lots of great new releases by Chiasa Aonuma, Yuki Maiko, Kanazawa Bunko, Fujisaki Minami, and the now legendary Kano Mizuho (aka Kusanagi Jun). Yesterday was pretty hectic. Chiharu, Kazuki and I took a day off to go down to Tokyo to buy our Saturn. We got a cool one, a SW2 short wagon with beige leather interior. (Click here for a picture of what Saturn's wagon is like.) We pick it up in two weeks.

It took us a long time to decide if we wanted to get a Saturn or not, mainly because the price of many domestic cars here in Japan has fallen along with the economy. However, because we are rather a unique group of people (or think of ourselves as such), we knew we wanted to be one of the few people in Gunma Prefecture with a Saturn. It'll be fun to drive it around.

We have a nice pre-weekend update for you tonight. First, there are new videos, including more copies of the popular High School Lesbian Diary title. Then, we have a nice new selection of new Video CDs, and one DVD. Saegusa Miyu fans should note the excellent Best Collection Then, we have some new toys -- there are some excellent figures from the classic anime show Devilman, and a nifty "real figure" of Tetsujin 28. Hello, all. We've had a busy Monday today, mostly with cleaning and arranging the J-List office. Monday is our designated day to clean anything, anyway, but we had a lot of extra work because the rest of our furniture (a small sofa that Chiharu insisted we get for the downstairs, since all Japanese companies have a small sofa near the front door for guests to sit down at) arrived today.

In sports news, Yomiuri Giants coast Nagashima has said he will not retire this year, but will continue to coast the most popular Japanese baseball team. Why? Word is, his retirement would cause many baseball fans to lose interest in the sport, which could exacerbate Japan's recession. Nagashima, a nice old man by now, is by far the most popular Japanese sports figure in the country.

Today's update is a nice little one. On the magazines/photobooks pages, we have added four different Photoshot issues to the page. Photoshot is one of the most popular of all Japanese magazines. With its square back, its large, glossy pages and his high photographic quality, it's more like a high-class hardcover shashinshu than a magazine. Very nice...

Then, we have more anime toys, including some that I am personally very in love with. For Ultraman fans, we have several Ultraman toys, including a deluxe giant-size replica of the original Ultraman. We have Kamen Rider soft vinyl toys, a super-cool detailed replica/figure of the flying turtle-monster Gamera, soft rubber key chains from To Heart, and more. The really cool one is the cast-iron figure from Ashita no Joe -- perfectly detailed and heavy in the hand, this is one dynamite item for fans of campy Japanese pop culture.

Hi-ho, from the land with cars with names like Super Saloon, Today, and Sunny." It's been a busy week for us here at J-List, and we're happy to see it come to an end. As soon as today's update is posted

Life is moving right along for us. With the office pretty much squared away (we still await delivery of one set of chairs for our big conference table, but everything else is hooked up and running smoothly), we are putting energy into fixing up the kids room. Pictures will undoubtedly be posted at some point in the future, when we get further along.

Tonight's update is a nice one. First, there are new magazines -- a new Best Video, among them. These are added to the rather formidable bunch of magazines that were posted earlier in the week. Then, we have -- a bunch of hardcover photobooks! The softcover Wet Dreams item (see right) is one of my favorites. To that, we are happy to add a cache of in-stock videos, ready to go out to you right away. Among the items added are more copies of Miura Aika's very popular PIA video, and more copies of the #1 all-time Japanese video in J-List's history, Fubuki Akira's "Baby Oil."

Hello from Japan. Today is Respect for the Aged Day, a national holiday. Considering that there are a many older people here in Japan, especially in smaller communities like Isesaki, where we are, it should be an important day. Judging from the crowds in the Toys R Us in Maebashi, everyone was spending time doing things for their kids instead of older people in their lives. We were shopping for a toy chest and some shelves for Rina and Kazuki's room (the old J-List office is going to the kids' room).

The weather forecast for the week is rain, thanks to the latest seasonal typhoon. (See a sattellite photo here if you like.) It sounds like a good week to shut all the windows and get caught up on my email. Summer has finally broken its hold on Japan, but it's still just muggy enough to require the air conditioning.

Today's update is a nice one. We have a whole bunch of great new magazines going into the list tonight, including Bejean (Kusanagi Jun alert!), great new issues of Dela Beppin, Gokuh, and Video Boy, and some specialty items like Nippon Mini-Suka Club. I'm enjoying a nice quiet Saturday morning in the office, drinking coffee and finishing up the latest update to the J-List homepage. I got the sudden urge to re-arrange the furniture in my office, so I am about an hour behind schedule. It looks much better now, though.

I noted with sadness after returning to Japan on Monday that Japanese film director Kurosawa Akira died -- on my father's birthday. Kurosawa is one of the Japanese responsible for putting this country on the map internationally, and it's sad to see him go.

Japan is currently under a wave of poisonings. It started with sodium cyanide in some curry rice at a summer festival a month ago (this turns out to have been done to defraud an insurance company), and since then someone has died drinking Oolong tea that had been poisoned, and there have been several incidences of poisonings in schools. What a zany country.

In J-List news, we've got -- a nice update! In addition to five or so new magazines (including the June Urecco, the "lost" March issue of Gal's Dee, and more), we have new in-stock videos (about 10 new videos in all), new soft vinyl toys (including the bizarre "Santa Girl, above), new issues of Windows 100% and MPEG CD Soft Catalog, and -- even more dojinshi! Well, Summer is officially over, more or less. It was a great time for us, and a hot time. Zipping back and forth over the Pacific four times sure made it fly by fast.

Japan is recovering from the latest typhoon, typhoon number 4 (they don't name them here, but assign them numbers instead), a real whopper that claimed 15 lives in Tochigi Prefecture (near where we are), in addition to hundreds of cattle, I saw on the news last night. In other news, Apple's iMac has arrived, to great public attention. I saw my first iMac at the Mac-kan in Takasaki the other day, and they are very svelte.

Hello to all. This week so far has seen an interesting change in the weather here in Japan -- it's actually gotten cold. It's currently around 15 degrees Celsius, quite uncomfortable to be outside in a T-shirt and shorts. It's late Wednesday night in Japan as I type this, and I've just reached the end of my current Allie McBiel tape. Remember, if you're in the U.S. or get American TV and don't watch this great show, give it a shot.

Japan's big news right now is that the prime minister, Hashimoto, has resigned to take responsibility for losses the Liberal Democratic Party (Jiminto in Japanese) suffered in Sunday's election. Losing a head of state in this fashion is nothing for Japan, indeed there have been eight prime minsters in the short eight years I've lived in Japan. I don't claim to understand the process by which the country moves forward at times like this, but apparently it happens all the time. Personally, I'd like to see a prime minister young enough to have ever used a computer come into power.

We've got a nice mid-week update for you. First, there are about 20 "one shot" magazines on the list, great items ranging from "way back when" issues of Dela Beppin and Video Boy to great recent amateur magazines. Also, on the manga page, there are a dozen or so "wide edition" adult mangas that we're offering -- some are quite good. and all are cheap, so check out the new items. Also, the April Urecco is really wonderful -- I have posted new scans showing some of the highlights.

Hi from Japan. The big news from this side of the ocean is that Godzilla has finally hit here -- to monster-sized yawn, according to most accounts. My wife and I were quite disappointed with the the film, not just because they turned one of the major film genres of the 20th century into Jurassic Park III, but also because of the lack of respect for the original work they showed. Except for Godzilla's piercing screech and the flashing Toho picture before the start of the movie, nothing survived the transition -- not the uplifting and unique original's musical score, not the themes of Godzilla as a protector of Japan, not the slow-moving campiness. All had been sacrificed for flashy CG and a love interest between Ferris Beuler and a blonde Betty Boop that was apparently inspired by the movie "Twister." (Japanese director Shusuke Kaneko pointed out in a Jiji Press article that it was interesting that the Japanese Godzilla "stoically braves missile attacks" which cannot harm him, but the American film-makers "seem unable to accept a creature that cannot be put down by their weapons.")

The film is really one of the best examples of how different Japan and America are. My wife, with all her wisdom, once observed that "if an American has a choice between a small, delicious piece of cake, and a big one that tastes awful, he'll take the big one every time." (Apologies to anyone who's offended by any of this...but my wife and I were up til dawn after watching the American Godzilla, so I wanted to pass on some of her thoughts to the list...) In Japan, a major aesthetic theme is that of wabi and sabi, which can be summed up as "less is more" or "simple is best." This can be explained best by a scene I saw in Hideyoshi, a great samurai drama that was on NHK a couple of years ago about the life of Hideyoshi Toyotomi

Greetings from still-hot Japan! My first week back in Japan is over, and we're ready for the weekend here at J-List. On Saturday the Tanabata Festival begins in Maebashi, so we'll be taking that in. This is a modern festival based on an old Chinese legend involving a prince (the star Vega) and a princess (some other star in the same constellation) who are doomed to meet each other only once a year. Big update for you this evening. First, the new Paradise Lost manga is in (vol. 7). This is a great item for any fan of Japanese dojinshi, as it offers 200+ pages of great erotic Evangelion dojinshi art with a great cover and price. Well, it's election time again here in Japan, and here, that means candidates driving around in trucks from 8 am with speakers mounted on them, announcing their platform and asking for the support of the neighborhood. The issues in this election center around the economy, as you can imagine, and mostly how to help stimulate the economy here out of the recession. The Japan Communist Party's platform, for example, supports reducing the consumption tax (sales tax) from 5% back to 3%.

The two-man team of commedians (one Japanese, one from Hong Kong) who are hitchhiking from the bottom of Africa to the top of the Scandanavian Peninsula have entered Kenya after five months on the road. Their trek is broadcase every Sunday evening in Japan and in Hong Kong. And Nasubi, the man who is trying to live off of things he wins by sending out thousands entries (he ran out of rice for a while, and had to live off of some dog food he had won), has moved, due to his top-secret location being discovered by some reporters. He has won approximately $4000 worth of prizes so far, and has only $6000 to go.

We've got some excellent items to add to the list today. First, there are a bunch of new Video CD and DVD titles, including some really excellent items. Fubuki Akira's premier on Video CD is here in a great title from Bauhaus. It's a soft porn performance that is just beautiful. As if that weren't good enough news, Kusanagi Jun's excellent soft-porn Video CD "G-Cup Danger" is a wonderful treat. Then there are new Video CD and DVD items by Aida Momo, Kanazawa Bunko, Ozawa Madoka, Shirakawa Marina, a Bust Video Gold Video CD compilation, and more. Momo Aida's compilation DVD (2 hours!) is especially recommended for fans of this great woman.

Then we have more magazines -- including the new issue of the excellent Dela Beppin (Kanazawa Bunko and Suzuki Momoka fans take note -- this issue is good), the new Pixie 17, the excellent Panstopia, and more.

Hello, all. Another update from the land of cars with names like Super Saloon, Soarer, Mitsubishi Thanks Chariot, and Bongo Friendy.

We had a nice surprise today: 40 copies of Kusanagi Jun's excellent photobook, Kubire (the word describes the inward curve of a woman's hip, which Jun-chan has in spades, with her tiny waist). We had been told by our distributor that the book was in limbo, waiting to see if it would be re-printed by its publisher, so we had removed it from the photobooks page. We're happy to report that it's back on the list now.

There are many other newly added items, including a cache of photobooks, including two excellent ones by photographer Goro. New magazines include Nippon Mini-suka, Panst Dream, the deluxe Mini-suka Collection, Be Back, and more. There are about 75 new items added in all.

JPOP fans should also stop by the JPOP page, to see the 5+ new albums and 30+ new CD singles that have been added. Speed's "My Graduation, new items by Amuro Namie, dos, TM Revolution, and more.

Be sure to see the video pages, if you haven't since yesterday, and see the new items that have been added. Remember, there are lots of bargain items to be had, like Ureccos and other magazines for $5, Iijima Ai's videos series for $25, and more.

P.S. Wow! As I write these words, watching the Japanese news, we just had a big earthquake here on the Kanto plain. I'm not sure of the magnitude, but it was a 3" rating according to the Japanese scale.

Hi, everyone. This is a quick update, since I had time to put the new Ureccos and Jo Mag issues onto the list. These magazines are very nice -- the Urecco issue has the "1997 Urecco Grand Prix, in which they present the results of the most-popular-om-Japan survey. Who will take the coveted #1 best in AV" slot? Or the "best in Swimsuit" category?

Well, I'm thirty today, the big three-oh. That's 10, 958 days (counting the last eight leap years), although it doesn't feel a day past 8000. Tonight Chiharu and I are going to our favorite French restaurant in Maebashi (the Japanese, historically believing themselves to be a European country, are quite fond of French cuisine), and then it's off to Ota for Deep Impact, which starts today.

Greetings from J-List June 17, 1998

Well, all this heat and humidity is better than the alternative, constant rain, which usually plagues Japan (except Hokkaido, which is so far north) during June and July. I do miss San Diego, which is right on the sea, and warmed with hot winds from the desert, which remove all the humidity from the air.

I'm off to Tokyo this evening, to meet some people, so I'm doing the update now. To save money (and because I like the place), I stay in a 24-hour sauna, which is basically a nice sauna/bath that you can enter any time, 24 hours a day. At night, you can sprawl out on a little mat, or in one of the reclining chairs they prepare for you. You have to be able to endure the snoring of 40 other middle-aged Japanese guys in the room with you, but it's the only way you can sleep in the heart of happenin' Shibuya for just $26.

Tonight's update brings another 25 or so items to the list, on the magazines and shashinshu pages. There are some very nice items on the photobook page especially, some nice items including a great black & white photobook of Gotoh Kumiko, and many more. Check the new items out fast, since they'll go quickly.

Greetings from J-List June 16, 1998

Hi from Japan. We had a nice day today -- Japan's rainy season gave us a day of respite, enabling us to spend some time on our finally-completed sun deck. We've added a wooden swing, and a small barbecue. It's wonderful. The new deck should be a good place to try out the telescope Chiharu bought me for my birthday (yes, I turn 30 this Saturday, the big three-oh).

Unfortunately, after over a year of faithful service, my Fuji DX-7 digital camera has apparently died. I wanted to post some pictures of the current state of the J-List office (the foundation is done, and the steel frame will be erected by this Friday), and the sun deck, but my camera is dead. I took some video images and posted them here and here.

We've got another update for you. It's a similar update to the one posted on Friday -- another 30 or so "one shot" books, items like Ureccos and Photoshots and Top Tens and Madaonnas, many from a few years ago. The items went very quickly on Friday, so hurry and check out the list if there are any items you think you want.

Hi, from the country of raw fish, strawberry sandwiches and elevator girls. I'm enjoying a class of red wine from Chile, while Chiharu snoozes on the couch as usual (this time it was Allie McBiel that put her to sleep). Japan is having quite a boom in red wine these days.

Kaori has not been herself for the last couple of days, because of getting one of her wisdom teeth pulled. Poor Kaori.

We've got a lot of nice new items tonight, mostly on the magazine and shashinshu pages. The new items include about 30 "one shot" magazines, some cool items from a few years ago, as well as recent items: Ureccos and Photoshots and Top Tens and Penthouse Japan's, and other items. Check them out soon!

Also, we've made a few changes to the J-List page. First, we've added a "magazine page 3" page, to allow us to spread out the stock items out so that they can be browsed more easily by everyone. Also, we've broken our DVD items away from the Video CD page, and onto their own page.

Hello again, from rainy Japan. It was actually a nice day today. Construction of the J-List office (we're going to call it "J-List Towers, although it's quite silly), and they're going to be raising the roof in another week. It's quite exciting to go to the site and see the concrete -- our concrete! -- being poured.

We've got a bunch of new items, including various new magazines and shashinshus (including cool issues of the popular Photoshot). These are mostly one shot" items that will be quite popular, so please check the list soon if you're interested.

Also, we've got two great new Otaku Publishing anime games on the games and CD ROMs pages. OTK10106, Paradise Heights (now shipping!), is a great new game about a wacky, erotic apartment complex. The sequel, OTK10107, Return to Paradise Heights (shipping in July, taking pre-orders now), carries the story even further. These two games are great items from Otaku Publishing.

It's a cold, gloomy Saturday in Japan, although we've been spared rain long enough for me to finish the sun deck. It's nice to have completed my first carpentry project, although it'll be a while before I undertake anything like that again.

Our big news is the official start (finally!) of construction of the J-List Office. The workmen actually started on Thursday, and have done quite a bit so far, digging out the space for the foundation and filling it with concrete, leveling the ground, and so on. It's been a long battle, and we're really happy to have the building underway. It'll be completed in September.

First of all, we've got about 30 new videos on the Video Catalog pages, including hot new videos by Kanazawa Bunko, Yuki Maiko, Fujisaki Minami, Kano Mizuho, and more. There are also about 50 new "in stock" videos on the Video Warehouse pages. Then, we've got new magazines -- a bunch, including new issues of Milky Tsushin, Sakuranbo Ekisu

Heigh-ho. I'm enjoying another night of watching American TV on videos sent from Mom, while Chiharu snores peacefully on the sofa. A day of working hard followed by an evening of half-understood X-Files episodes has put her to sleep once again.

We've got a fistful of great new additions to the list tonight. First of all, there are a bunch of great new items on the shashinshu page, including Vivian Hsu's wonderful photobook "Angel, and two by the gorgeous Kusanagi Jun/Asami Narua (two names for the same lovely woman). These are truly great items that we're happy to have been able to find for you.

Then, there are dozens of new items, courtesy of Kaori and Tomoe's efforts to clean out the stock room and find all the items that have fallen through the cracks. There are, as a result, about 50 new" items, magazines, dojinshi, photobooks -- many of which are rare, and will go very quickly.

It's Friday here in Japan, and I just got done watching the #1 drama on Japanese television. It's called "Meguriai, and it's basically a hammed-up dorama by the Fuji Television Network about the lives and loves of four people -- but I love it. Now we're watching some late-night show in which an ugly New Half" (a man who has become a woman) is interviewing cute Japanese women about something. Wacky Japanese television.

Kaori, my wife and I are all excited about the TRF concert tomorrow. TRF is a Japanese band, one of the "Komuro Family" of musicians and bands (produced by Tetsuya Komuro). It's nice to not have to go all the way into Tokyo for a concert -- TRF has come to Maebashi for us.

The new items we have for the weekend include the wonderful illustration book by Satoshi "Plastic Little" Urushihara, Cell Works. We've got more copies of the popular nude hardcover photobook by Kanno Miho, new magazines, the new Windows 100% CD ROM & magazine combo, and more. Enjoy the new items!

Well, it's Monday here in Japan. My daughter Rina is exactly one and a half today. She's in the J-List office right now, sitting in Kaori's chair (for some reason she loves chasing Kaori out of her chair when she comes to visit us).

Japan is bustling about the victory of Waka-no-hana, one of the most popular Japanese sumo wrestlers, at the spring Sumo Tournament that ended yesterday. He defeated Hawaiian wrestler Musashino-maru (the guy who looks like an Italian pizza delivery boy -- all of the other Hawaiian wrestlers could pass for Japanese on the street, but ). Waka-no-hana's second straight victory enabled him to reach the rank of Yokozuna, the highest in the sport, joining his brother, Taka-no-hana, and the top-ranked American, Akebono.

The other big news in Japan is the marriage of pop star Matsuda Seiko in a small ceremony in Tokyo. Her new husband is her daughter Sayaka's dentist. Seiko, an extremely famous star who has been a force in the Japanese music scene for more than fifteen years, has made several attempts to break into American music as well. The women many Japanese love to hate, I love her because she's a strong, ballsey woman. She got divorced from her first husband, the actor Kanda Masaki, earlier this year.

There are lots of new items for you all today. First, there are new JPOP CDs (about 25 singles), including great ones by TRF, My Little Lover, Matsutoya Yumi, and more. Then, we have new items on the anime page -- seven new soft vinyl figurines from the Sentimental Graffiti game series. These are extremely realistic-looking anime dolls that you can collect and display. New magazine on the magazine pages include Jo Mag, Gal's Dee, and more. And don't forget that we've got lots of close-out magazines, some going for as low as $3

We've also made a long-overdue change to our video pages. In the past, we've had four pages of "available-by-order" videos, and two pages of "in-stock" videos. The problem is that we've got far more in stock than are on the by-order pages. We've not swapped the two, so that there are four "Video Warehouse" pages and two "Video Catalog" pages. This allows us to put less videos on each page, reducing load time for everyone. As always, the newer additions to the in-stock videos will be on the first page, and close-out bargain videos will be on page 4.

Ah, summer. It's come to Japan with a vengeance, although it's still a month off according to the calendar. The temperature isn't all that high, but the humidity is through the roof. We officially activated our office air condition -- thank god for the gifts of the 20th century.

Every year, the Japanese news reports on which Japanese pay the most income taxes (and thus, had the highest income). The famous Japanese music producer Tetsuya Komuro (who has discover/created such Japanese musicians as Amuro Namie, TRF and Kahala Tomomi -- his many musical creations are known collectivel as the "Komuro Family" here in Japan) is in the #4 of all Japanese, paying roughly US$8 million in taxes. He was #10 last year, so he's doing well. The top-paying actor/entertainer was Taka from Tunnels, who plays the Japanese baseball player in the Major League Baseball movies (the guy who shouts "You have no marbles!").

Hello, and Happy Friday everyone. It's been very quiet around here all afternoon, mainly because Kaori took the afternoon off to get her teeth worked on. I took some time off myself to take the kids for a long bicycle ride. Now that the rain has stopped, it's been nice every day.

The famous sumo wrestler Konishiki, the first Hawaiian wrestler to reach the level of ozeki (the second highest level in the sport), has retired. He's starring in a line of whisky commercials by Suntory in which he uses his great body (upwards of 450 pounds) to imitate bottles of Suntory whisky.

We've got a ton of great items for you today, starting with the February issue of Urecco, which features the beautiful and luscious Asami Narua, who has a 92 cm bust yet a tiny 52 cm waist. The latest issues of Milky Tsushin and Sakuranbo Ekisu are on the list now, as are many more copies of the popular Jo Mag January 1998 issue, featuring the beautiful catlike Andoh Aya. Hello, all. Chiharu and I are enjoying a Saturday evening of Japanese television. First was "Hit Parade!, a cool show that has top Japanese singers singing songs of other singers, which causes some interesting combinations. Then we watched Much Ado about Love, in which famous Japanese comedian Samba has funny conversations about love and sex with pretty women. And now we're watching old episodes of 90210 that NHK keeps on the air. It's great to meet other ex-pat Americans living in Japan who wouldn't admit to watching the show before coming to live here.

The sudden suicide death of Hide, of the popular Japanese rock band X Japan, is current in the news right now. His death has shocked and galvanized his fans, including my wife, who has been a fan of this group ever since she happened to meet Toshi, the lead singer, in a karaoke bar in Los Angeles.

We have a small update tonight, mainly more magazines and photobooks. Especially recommended are the Asami Mao the Nagai Madoka shashinshus. Also, we've knocked down even more prices on magazines and videos that we have too many of, so please check out those pages if you have time -- thanks.

Japan is huming along today. Lots of news about the earthquake off the coast of Okinawa. Miura Kazuyoshi ("Kaz"), the most famous Japanese soccer player, turned 30 today. Alien 4 and Starship Troopers have finally wandered into movie theatres here, so I've got some movies to take in on the weekend.

Well, Golden Week is finally at an end. Kaori had a nice week off, which means that I was, er, rather busy make sure the emails got out on time. It's funny how your perception of holidays changes when you run a business. ^_^

I have a new virtual pet. It's called Teku Teku Angel, and it's essentially a simple electronic device for recording the number of steps you take during the day, to encourage you to walk more. But it's got a Teku Teku Angel virtual pet living inside it, and if you don't get enough exercise, your pet will eventually wither and die. Hopefully this will get me away from the computer a little more. Is this the next wave of trendy things from Asia?

We have some great new items for everyone today. First, there are about 50 new JPOP CDs, with some great albums (Matsuda Seiko, Akina Nakamori, Nakayama Miho) as well as excellent recent CD singles by such bands as My Little Lover, Globe, Amuro Namie, and more. Well, Golden Week has started here in Japan. Golden Week is a bunch of Japanese holidays (Green Day, the former Showa Emperor's birthday, Constitution Celebration Day, Boy's Day, and so on) that usually fall very close to each other. All of Japan goes wild trying to experience leisure, which means that anywhere you go in Japan during this time, you find crowds of people. Chiharu and I are going t hunker down, maybe take in a movie at our favorite American-style movie theater in Ota (home of the Subaru Corporation), and relax.

We've got a ton of new items for you, mostly on the magazine, shashinshu, and video warehouse pages. We've got a bunch of Photoshot and NoWon "shashinshu type" magazines, about 50 new videos, several older and rare magazines, and more. We've got some cool shojo manga on the anime page. Another Monday has come to Japan. The weather is still rather dreary, but I managed to get a little bit of work in on the sun deck we're building on our verandah.

Kazuki and I enjoyed the trip to Shizuoka Prefecture. We went to a wonderful onsen (hot springs) hotel near Lake Hamanako, and bathed in the hot springs while looking out over the lake. Kazuki was thrilled to be able to ride a Shinkansen for the first time. He has memorized all the names of the various Shinkansen (Hikari, Nozomi, Tsubasa, etc.) that run in the Kanto region of Japan -- not bad for the age of three.

The two-man team "Yan-pai" (a Japanese comedian and a man from Hong Kong who are hitchhiking from the Cape of Good Hope up to the top of Europe, on the Japanese television show Denpa Shonen) are in Zimbabwe right now (they couldn't cross through Angola because of civil war there), and working their way north. Great television like Denpa Shonen is part of what makes living in Japan fun.

Kazuki is so happy to be able to ride his first Shinkansen (Bullet Train) and go to a hot springs hotel. Unfortunately we both have come down with freak colds -- I hope we're not too miserable tomorrow.

I'm very happy to announce that the latest JAST USA title, Runaway City, is finally shipping, along with RCY America's premier release, Nocturnal Illusion. It was a long battle, and we ended up many months behind schedule, but they are finally out the door. The season of the sakura has come to Japan, but we have a cruel April Fool's present: snow. A freezing cold day has given way to a snowy night, and now the sound of snow falling off our roof is . We had been planning the J-List Flower Viewing Party for a few days from now. Hopefully we won't be thwarted.

Hello again. We've been busy all week, which is why there haven't been any updates. We forewent our customer Friday night movie tonight, and took in a video -- Seven -- at home. A truly fascinating movie, if you haven't seen it. Now Chiharu has gone to bed, and I'm finishing up the evening's uploading (since we're going to be moving into the J-List office in the summer, we still use a lowly 28.8 connection for everything here) with the help of more old Babylon 5 episodes.

Chiharu is happy -- we now are the owners of that great icon of American convenience, the clothes dryer. In Japan, dryers are about as common as central heating, but I finally broke down and bought her one as a wedding anniversary present (which was today).

Well, Thursday is about to give way to Friday here in Japan. Friday in this case -- the 27th -- is Kaori's birthday (she'll be 23), and she's taking the day off to go somewhere with her "darling."

Hello out there in The World. It's late Wednesday night as I write this, and a tall 500 ml Asahi Super Dry is keeping me company. Wife Chiharu is taking notes on what she has to go tomorrow. (Since we're a Japanese company, she gets to handle all the Japanese red tape.)

We're proceeding with our plans to build an office again. After a careful search of suitable companies, we were going to go with Toyota Home (yes, Toyota builds houses here -- what a wacky place). At the last minute, we found a small but reliable company that looks like they'll suit our needs better. Let's just hope they don't go belly up, too.

We've got some nice items for you tonight. First, the new Urecco is in, and it is lovely -- especially for fans of Fubuki Akira. New issues of Gal's Dee, Milky Tsushin, and Sakuranbo Ekisu are also in -- and all are great. Finally, there's a new Miura Aika Video CD on the VCD/DVD page, which presents clips of videos from various points in Aika's long career -- which makes for some interesting viewing. Just got back from seeing "The Game" at the Cinema World Ota, the American-style large movie theatre that my wife and I go to nearly every weekend. A great flick, truly -- I recommend it.

Saturday is Valentine's Day here in Japan -- as everyone who has played Season of the Sakura knows, it's a day when men can expect chocolate from their girlfriends, wives, daughters, etc. Kaori brought me chocolate versions of Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore and Piglet (she's got a thing for Whinnie the Pooh). I hope you all get some chocolate, wherever you are.

Nice new items for the weekend include a bunch of new magazines, including Gokuh, Dela Beppin, Panst Love, and a new one, Lucky Crepe. Well, the flu still has us all down, but Kaori was able to crawl into work for the first time day this week. Unfortunately, the flu has slowed down the speed with which we get packages out the door. We'll do our best to get caught up by Friday -- sorry for any inconvenience.

The Nagano Olympics are progressing nicely. It was nice to see Shimizu take gold the men's speed skating. It means so much to the Japanese to have the world looking at them during this time. Since much of Japan's actions as a country over the last 150 years can be traced to wanting to be seen as an equal among other nations, getting this kind of attention really makes everyone here happy.

We've got some nice new items for you today -- tons of new "in stock" videos, which can be found on the Video Warehouse pages. Miura Aika, Uehara Ayaka, Wakana Sena, Kanabun and more -- all in stock now and ready to be ordered with no waiting. There are about 75 new video in all.

Well, another Friday has come to Japan, and today it's Mika who's out sick. Kaori and I are both coughing a lot, though. I hope the flu passes up by quickly.

Well, Japan is getting ready to host the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano. On a map, Nagano is right next to Gunma, although in reality, it's quite far for us to drive. Given the massive numbers of people, the special high rates for everything from hotels to trains, and the excellent TV coverage, we'll be happy to spend our Olympics at home.

There are some new magazines on the list this weekend, including a new Milky Tsushin and "Sakura Ekisu, the successor to Sakuranbo Tsushin. Both are excellent for fans of sexy women with long legs that go all the way down. Remember to check page 2 of the magazines for extra special bargains.

We've also got, ahem, a few dojinshi for you today. About 100, actually, including some really nice ones (the Touch one just slew me). As usual, I recommend that you give a list of secondary choices when making an order, as items to tend to go very quickly. Be sure to check out the closeout dojinshi we've got -- they're going for practically nothing.

Incidentally, a lot of people have asked, so I'll re-iterate: any DVD that J-List sells will be compatible with your DVD players, regardless of where you are. There is a country lockout" feature built into DVD, which allow the makers to make a disc that will only play, say, in Asia -- but it's up to the makers if they want to use them or not. All the discs we sell are verified to be for "ALL" regions, so there will be no problems with the disc not playing in your region.

Today was a big day for all of us at J-List. It was the day we had the local Shinto Priest (who is a friend of my mother in law's) come and perform a Shinto purification ceremony in preparation for the J-List office that we're building. I've been nearly a year that we've been trying to get permission to build on our land, which was designated as "agricultural land, so this day meant a lot to us. It was interesting to watch the ceremony -- it reminded me of the last episode of Blue Seed, if you're familiar with that anime show -- and so I made a little page of digital photographs, accessible from the J-List front page. Check it out, of you're interested in Japanese religious ceremonies.

We've gotten in some new items today, including more copies of the excellent Bishojo Syndrome adult dojinshi anthologies. Like the popular Lunatic Party, Paradise Lost and Angelic Impact series, Bisho Syndrome are dojinshi anthologies" -- collections of the best dojinshi stories that are republished in a high-quality "wide version" manga book. We've got all four volumes of Bishojo Syndrome back in stock, and we've even got a money-saving "Bishojo set, too.

The other big news we have today is -- dojinshi! Yes, we've gotten in another Big Batch of Dojinshi, and we've posted them to the homepage. There are about 50 new titles or so. Hello, from a very cold Japan. Kaz and I just got back from the local sento, or public bath. The place we go to is large, with six different baths: scalding hot, medicinal, strong and medium jets, you name it. I'm glad that Japan has such cool father-son customs. There's a Japanese word to describe what a parent-child relationship should strive to attain -- "skinship." Japan is a cool place sometimes.

I enjoyed watching the Superbowl, although trying to watch football with any non-North American (my wife in this case) is never easy. We Americans don't realize how difficult the rules are to outsiders. This was my first Superbowl watched entirely with Japanese announcers, and it was surprising how well it worked.
